Get a taste of home at Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn
Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn in Owensboro, KY has been cooking in the old-fashioned Kentucky way ever since the original owners, Cathrine and Pappy Bosley, bought the restaurant in 1963.
The building has had upgrades and additions, but the food has remained the same! Even though that means it may take hours to prepare one piece of meat or side dish.
Take mutton, for example. It cooks for almost 15 hours!
And no, they didn’t hire your grandma to cook. Give her a call (because we all need to call our grandmothers more) to check. She’s not in their kitchen. They had four generations of their own family to perfect their cooking skills.
Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn cooks all their meat in handmade, hickory wood-fired pits that are about the size of a midsized car. The pits are monitored 24/7 by pit masters that went through two years of training in order to hold that title and pitchfork.
The restaurant operates in three shifts. The cooks and pit masters are in the kitchen 24 hours a day, seven days a week to ensure they can serve the 350 seat restaurant, catering and pick up orders.
On average they cook 2,000 lbs. of meat a day.
Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn is famous for their bar-b-q buffet and mutton. The buffet is one of its kind and has all the bar-b-q your little heart (and stomach) desires.
Mutton is meat from an older sheep just as beef is from a mature cow. Co-Owner, Patrick Bosley said mutton is a deep-rooted, Kentucky tradition.
“It’s heritage. It kind of goes back to who you are and where you come from. We’re just blessed to have the tradition continue in Kentucky.”
You can try their famous mutton along with all their other items on the buffet and maybe you’ll get a taste of home.
