The Central High School Varsity Choir performed Christmas carols, and Mayor Winnecke offered a few remarks before starting the countdown to turn on the Christmas tree lights.
The Evansville Police Department also diverted traffic downtown while the event took place at the Civic Center.
The Christmas tree will remain on display through the holiday season and will be removed sometime after the new year.
