Pumpkins galore, disc golf and more at the 15th Annual Pumpkin Shootout

The 15th Annual Pumpkin Shootout will take over Mesker Park this weekend, November 1-3.

What is the Pumpkin Shootout you ask? It is an annual disc golf tournament that is sanctioned by the Professional Disc Golf Association that brings in players from all over the midwest and includes hundreds of pumpkins!

Players span all levels of play starting from Juniors through Professionals. Other divisions include Novice, Recreational, Intermediate and Advanced. A slew of professionals will be playing this weekend including Evansville native, Paul Oman according to Tournament Director Ben Verkamp.

And if you didn’t know there were Disc Golf professionals, you probably didn’t that they can make mad cash “throwing a piece of plastic around the woods” as Verkamp put it. Some professionals attending the tournament this weekend have raked in over $50,000 in winnings over the span of their disc golf careers.

That’s a fun side hustle if you ask us.

However, these pros are dedicated and give lots of their weekends to the game. They play in many tournaments a year; some play in 20 tournaments a year and some, over 40.

This Tri-State event is so popular, the tournament was filled within 12 minutes of opening registration according to Tournament Director Ben Verkamp.

So, no, you won’t be able to sign up to participate in this year’s event, but you can watch and see the hundreds of pumpkins they carve just for the event (can you call it a “Pumpkin Shootout” if there are no pumpkins?).

Each year organizers hold a huge pumpkin carving party the night before the event that is open to the public. They carve hundreds of pumpkins and light them up for the infamous Glow Round!

Intrigued? Us, too.

Each Saturday night before the main event, most of the pumpkins carved for the event are lit for one round of illuminated disc golf. Many players use glow in the dark discs and some light up their discs with small lights. And just like the tournament, this special round fills up fast, but if you choose to participate in the pumpkin carving chaos, you’ll have first dibs for the Glow Round.

This year Pumpkin Carving event is Friday, November 1 and is hosted by Dave Richters on his property located at 6510 Laura Lane, Evansville, IN.
